Mum’s the Word is a dark comedy with music and dance. The piece is fairly abstract, but does follow a linear story line. The story is about Todd and Lois, an affluent, but dissatisfied Charlotte couple who adopt a baby from a war torn part of the world. Rather than the infant they were expecting, a teenage Somali pirate shows up at their door. Things go from bad to worse in hilarious fashion.
Adult language and sexual situations make this work inappropriate for children.
The show was conceived and directed by Creative Loafing Theatre Person of the Year Matt Cosper, a theatre maker who has worked in Europe, NYC and on the west coast, but who makes his home here in Charlotte.
The Cast consists of Robert Lee Simmons and Lauren Dortch Crozier, two of Charlotte’s most acclaimed young actors, and Biniam Tekola, an actor and writer who is based out of New York City.
The Machine is unique as a theatre here in Charlotte because they create their own work from scratch. Mum’s the Word, like all of The Machine’s work, is a totally original piece of theatre created collaboratively by the region’s most adventurous theatre professionals.
