Walking Talking Tours are offering their Liberty Walk Tour to benefit the May 20th Society on Sunday, May 21 from 10 a.m. – 4:20 p.m.
The tour starts at Polk Park (Trade and Tryon Streets).
The tour route/content –
Stop 1: Begins at Thomas Polk Park – (story of Mec. Dec./Resolves)
Stop 2: Pat Jack’s Tavern location – (story of James Jack’s Ride, role of taverns in Rev., including collection of tax used for Queens College/Museum/Liberty Hall)
Stop 3: First Presbyterian Church (discussion of conflict between Anglicans/Presbyterians; influence of Alexander Craighead, est. of 7 Sisters),
Stop 4: Settlers’ Cemetery (Brief discussion about Thomas Polk’s role in Rev. (not nearly as comprehensive as Jim’s interpretation), George Graham, and Dr. Brevard), 5th & Tryon (Battle of Charlotte, Nathanael Green’s role),
Stop 5: Completing the loop around the block at Trade & Tryon (ends with post war visit by Washington).
The tour content is based on authoritative sources – Scott’s book, my own personal research with help from Jane Johnson using reliable primary and secondary source content, and content shared by Jim & Ann (old town cemetery prior to Settlers, British cemetery, and additional content on Dr. Brevard used for recent Voices from the Past Program).
