Envision: Charlotte Announced at Clinton Global Initiative

Today at 9:15am in New York City President Bill Clinton will put Charlotte (and CCCP) front and center on the world stage at the Clinton Global Initiatives.

He was joined by Duke Energy CEO Jim Rogers, Cisco CEO John Chambers, our boss, Charlotte Center City Partners CEO Michael Smith and Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx to announce Envision: Charlotte… a significant sustainability initiative and transformative program for uptown Charlotte office buildings. The attached press release explains Envision: Charlotte in details.

That New York announcement will be followed one in Charlotte at 11:00am (you can join us if you are free…VERY exciting stuff). Charlotte Center City Partners Chairman Todd Mansfield will represent us along with Duke Energy's Brett Carter, Ed Bradley from CISCO, Kendall Alley-Charlotte Community Banking Regional President for Wells Fargo, Lisa Shpritz-Corporate Workplace Environmental Risk and Sustainability Director for Bank of America, Landon Wyatt-Chairman of the Charlotte Regional Partnership, Mayor Pro Tem Patrick Cannon, Mecklenburg County Commission Chair Jennifer Roberts. Other partners in this initiative include UNC Charlotte, the State of North Carolina and the Environmental Defense Fund.

Envision: Charlotte will establish a collaborative partnership among public, educational and private companies and agencies to connect numerous environmental programs and initiatives under the shared vision of uniting for a sustainable city. Envision: Charlotte also supports our 2020 Center City Vision Plan for becoming the most sustainable urban core in the nation.

A primary focus of Envision: Charlotte is to reduce energy use in commercial buildings within Charlotte’s 1.94 square-mile I-277 inter-belt loop. The “Smart Energy Now” program, a first-of-its-kind, sustainable model to measure, manage and reduce energy use and emissions, will seek to partner with the owners of approximately 60 commercial buildings who control more than 15 million square feet within the inter-loop. The goal is to reduce energy use by up to 20 percent and avoid approximately 220,000 metric tons of greenhouse gases by 2016.

Commercial building owners can participate in the initiative at no cost.

The Envision: Charlotte initiative builds on the Charlotte region’s economic development “energy cluster” initiative. It will also support our city’s efforts to recruit companies and jobs by highlighting lower costs of operations in Center City commercial office spaces as we reduce operations and energy costs. This will allow us to attract companies and recruit businesses that care about a great business climate and environmental sustainability.

We hope you are as excited about this as we are. Thank you for all you do for CCCP and our Center City. You can find details at www.EnvisionCharlotte.com.
