Atherton Market Adds Third Market Day
After a successful inaugural summer season, Atherton Market is now adding a third market day and changing its weekday operating hours to meet the increased demand from market customers.
Effective immediately, Atherton Market will now be open year-round on Tuesdays, 3-7 pm; Wednesdays, 9 am-1 pm; and Saturdays, 9 am-2 pm.
"We’ve seen an amazing response from Charlotte shoppers during our first four months of operation and our new hours and year-round status reflect the continuous need for locally-sourced food and products," said Lynn Caldwell, Atherton Market manager. "As Charlotte’s only year-round, producer only market, Atherton Market is unique in that all of our vendors make or grow what they sell and we can now offer these items in any season, any time of the year."
Along with its new operating schedule, Atherton Market will have specialty vendors to welcome the fall season with unique offerings like ostrich and pastured turkeys for the holidays along with weekly vendors that offer seafood, grass-fed beef, pastured eggs, lamb, pork and chicken. The market will also have a harvest of other fall fare such as mushrooms, heirloom pumpkins and microgreens.
In addition to the Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday markets, Atherton Market has the following exciting events scheduled during the next two months:
Tuesday’s Chef in the Market series – Every Tuesday in October: Taught by some of Charlotte’s most notable chefs such as Suzanne Dillingham and Heidi Billotto, this informative new series will guide shoppers through the market and help them select fresh market offerings that can be turned into easy and scrumptious gourmet meals! Look for details on the Chef in the Market series on Atherton Market’s Facebook page or on the market’s weekly e-newsletter.
Fall Gardening Day – Saturday, September 25th, 9 am - 2 pm: Experts will be on hand to discuss gardening, composting and water catchment. Shoppers can choose from unique yard and garden tools to help get started on a fall garden or take an existing garden to the next level.
Carolina’s Got Art Grand Opening – Friday, October 1st, 5 pm - 8 pm: For this special Friday evening Grand Opening of Carolina’s Got Art, the popular annual art exhibition for North and South Carolina artists, Atherton Market will be open to offer prepared foods, wine tastings and local artisan goods. Along with celebrating the opening of this exhibit at Atherton Mill, this special market night will be an extension of the First Friday Gallery Crawl of the season in the historic and artistic South End District.
Green Halloween Costume Swap and Pumpkin Painting – Saturday, October 9th, 9 am - 2 pm: Shoppers can go green this Halloween with a special children’s costume swap and pumpkin painting celebration.
Celebrate the Great Outdoors – Saturday, October 16th, 9 am - 2 pm: The "Trips for Kids" team will be at Atherton Market offering bicycle tune ups to raise money for this unique Charlotte mentoring program. Plus, The Outdoor Herbivore will be demonstrating how to preserve food with a dehydrator as well as other tips for preparing mobile food.
The Nutrition Detective Program – Children and parents can learn how to snoop out the freshest, seasonal and most local food around and how to properly read food labels for optimum nutritional education. Hosted by market manager Lynn Caldwell, the program is available to school or home school groups on Wednesdays for a small fee. Contact Lynn Caldwell at athertonmarket@gmail.com for scheduling.
Atherton Market is located in Charlotte’s historic South End at 2104 South Boulevard just south of the intersection of South Boulevard & Tremont Avenue in the former Charlotte Trolley Barn.
