Time Warner Cable Arena Celebrates Five Years Today

Today marks five years since Time Warner Cable Arena opened its doors to the sounds of the legendary Rolling Stones, paving the way for the arena to become the premier destination for sports and entertainment in the Carolinas. From the National Basketball Association and minor league hockey to music icons like Aerosmith, Beyonce, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, Paul McCartney, U2, Van Halen and more, Time Warner Cable Arena has made Charlotte a "must-play" city. Repeat family shows like Ringling Bros., Disney on Ice and the Harlem Globetrotters make annual stops at Time Warner Cable Arena, and major college basketball tournaments like the NCAA, ACC and CIAA have called Charlotte home since the arena opened because of its location and fan amenities.

Mike Crum, Chief Operating Officer of the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority, worked with many others to bring Time Warner Cable Arena into existence. "We wanted to add to the momentum and ambiance we were developing in Uptown Charlotte. We wanted to bring an NBA team back to the city, and we wanted a building that could be used for concerts and other events."

Having a state-of-the-art facility in the heart of Uptown Charlotte has helped the city not only attract world class performers to entertain fans from across the region, but also entice urban planners and real estate developers to embark on major projects in the vicinity of the arena. Since Time Warner Cable Arena’s completion in 2005, a light rail line connecting neighborhoods south of the city to the arena has been built, retail and restaurants now surround the arena, multiple hotels have gone up adjacent to or within a few blocks of the arena, and parking structures have been erected to meet the new demand for parking.
