New Website from CPCC for Workers in Transition

As unemployment rates increase across the region, Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) is pleased to announce the launch of its new "Resources for Changing Careers" web page. The site is a "one-stop shop" for local residents interested in pursuing a career change, connecting users to "fast-track" careers, opportunities in the area's burgeoning energy sector, and CPCC and community resources that will allow them to successfully transition into growth industries.

"This is a valuable resource tool to many residents, especially during today's tough economic times," said Dr. Tony Zeiss, president of CPCC. "While the job market appears grim, our research indicates that there are still jobs available in what we call ‘in-demand' fields - education, energy, information technology and others. We want the community to think of CPCC as its ‘go-to' place for developing a new career future; a critical community partner that is dedicated to building a strong workforce in the Queen City and beyond." The web page's main feature is its "Jobs in Demand" link. Here, visitors are connected to the College's in-demand degree and certification programs - more than 130-strong - that can be completed within 15-18 months.

"Many local residents are currently unemployed or at-risk of losing their job," said Dr. Zeiss. "This page in particular strives to put individuals on the fast track to professional success. In a little over a year, students can earn a CPCC degree, diploma or certificate that will equip them for today's ‘in-demand' industries. Visitors to the site can read industry overviews that include occupation outlooks, job growth projections and salary ranges, while learning about CPCC's tuition costs and registration information. It truly is a ‘one-stop' resource."

The "Jobs in Demand" link also provides helpful information on the area's energy industry, an emerging field in the Charlotte metro area. Visitors can learn about the College's Center for Sustainability, non-destructive examination and electrical engineering programs and connect to leading area employers that need individuals with these valuable skills.

In addition, the site links visitors to a variety of useful resources such as the North Carolina Employment Security Commission, Workforce Development Board's JobLink Centers and Career Transitions and Outplacement Services that offer financial resources for educational pursuits. Visitors will also have access to College resources, including information that gives visitors access to information on the College, including its six campus locations located throughout Mecklenburg County.

"The new site has something for everyone," said Dr. Zeiss. "It can help the entrepreneur interested in starting a new business, the business owner seeking customized workforce training or the individual needing to learn a new professional skill. We want the community to know that CPCC can help them succeed, both at work and in life."

CPCC's new web page was created following the College's successful March 16 "Resources for Changing Times" event. The program was a collaborative event between Charlotte's business and education communities that garnered more than 250 attendees and provided participants with perspective on today's employment outlook through an array of "how-to" workshops and panel discussions.
