“The Compliment Guys” spread sunshine in Charlotte as Part of 10-city U.S. Tour

Rochester, NY, July 8, 2009 — Purdue University students Cameron Brown and Brett Westcott — better known as the “Compliment Guys” — will be in Charlotte this Friday, July 24. The Charlotte stop is part of a 10-city summer road trip they began Monday to spread compliments and smiles to U.S. cities.

They’ll be in Uptown Charlotte at the Visitor’s Center at 9:30 a.m. and at the corner of Trade and Tryon at 10:30 a.m.

“We’re thrilled that the Compliment Guys will be in Charlotte,” said Beth Petty, director of the Charlotte Regional Film Commission, who is working with the Compliment Guys’ production company on their Charlotte visit. “Getting a compliment is a great way to start the weekend.”

Cameron and Brett are part of a trend sweeping the nation, called “brightsiding” – the act of intentionally doing things that will make people smile and feel good. The hope is that people on the receiving end continue to spread the cheer by passing compliments on to others.

In 2008, Brett and Cameron started a weekly ritual of standing outside the Purdue University chemistry building with a “Free Compliments” sign, offering kind and encouraging words to people who walked past. Every Wednesday – despite rain, sleet or snow – they stood in the same spot on campus to share upbeat pleasantries with their fellow classmates and faculty.

“We have gotten a lot of personal satisfaction by complimenting people over the past year and seeing how it makes them happy,” said Brett Westcott. “We have regulars who come by every week, and some people have even started giving us compliments in return as they walk by. It’s contagious!”

“Making people smile and brightening their day is something we love to do and now, thanks to Kodak, we are excited to spread our compliments beyond just the Purdue campus,” said Cameron Brown.

Kodak has teamed up with Cameron and Brett to take their brightsiding efforts beyond campus to make America smile. Beginning July 20, the pair will be visiting 10 cities – beginning in New Orleans and ending in New York – in order to compliment as many people as possible.
