2019 State of the Center City Released

 This decade is on pace to be the most productive decade for Center City office, residential and hotel construction in Charlotte’s history, according to data released this evening by Charlotte Center City Partners.

The 2019 State of the Center City report is the latest and most comprehensive research and economic development data focused on the city’s urban core. This year’s report provides a snapshot of current and planned development within Charlotte Center City. Projects currently under construction in Center City represent $1.7 billion in investment. Charlotte’s central business district is the fifth-busiest in America for office construction, behind only New York, Chicago, Seattle and Washington.

Among other highlights from the report:

  • There is 6.9 million square feet of office space, 8,458 housing units, 2,310 hotel rooms, and more than 948,000 square feet of retail space planned or under construction in Center City
  • Almost 15,000 tech workers moved to Charlotte from 2011-16, the second-highest growth in the U.S. behind the San Francisco Bay area
  • Ninety-two percent of Mecklenburg County residents have visited Uptown in the past year, most of whom chose to spend money in Center City for culinary, arts and sports experiences that cannot be replicated elsewhere in the market
