Lights Out this Saturday for Earth Hour

March 27, 2014 10:16 am

Envision Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, Center City Partners, Duke Energy, Sustain Charlotte and the City of Charlotte encourage employers and neighborhoods to turn off non-essential lights for one hour this Saturday in recognition of Earth Hour.

Known as the world’s largest public environmental action, Earth Hour will begin at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 29 and will be celebrated in more than 7,000 cities across the world.

In Charlotte, participants include the Duke Energy Center, Fifth Third Center, and the Hearst Tower.

Mecklenburg County will turn out lights at the Civil Courthouse, the County & Courts Office Building, the New Courthouse, and the Judge Clifton E. Johnson Building.  The City will turn out lights at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center and Old City Hall. Other commercial buildings, restaurants, residents and others are encouraged to participate.

Please see below for a full list of participating buildings.

Residents and businesses can tag photos and events of their Earth Hour experience using #MeckEarthHour and #Power2CLT. A Facebook event is also available to share stories and ideas. Participation in Earth Hour will be one more example of how the local business and residential community, County, and City are leading the way in implementing sustainable practices across the board.
