South End celebrates development, new investmentsMay 14, 2013 4:11 pm
The press conference announced the addition of several new investments in the neighborhood, including branded bicycle racks, benches, street furniture and “Big Belly” solar-powered recycling units. During the bus tour, members of City Council got a first-hand look at some of the construction projects currently underway along with information about the district’s new businesses and growth strategies.
South End will double its residents by the end of 2015, and has already experienced tons of growth and interest. Among the latest numbers:
– South End is home to more than 750 businesses (300 retail)
– The district has experienced 49% growth in dining and entertainment in the last 4 years (and we will soon welcome new restaurants Nan & Byron’s, Luciano’s and Tupelo Honey Café!)
– South End has seen a 23% growth in furnishings and design businesses
“South End is an object lesson for us in the power of transit-oriented development,” said Michael J. Smith, President & CEO of Charlotte Center City Partners. “We are going to see these lessons played out across the Charlotte region in the coming 20 years. These investments are part of fulfilling our living, breathing strategic plan for South End.”
