(1935) Josephine Baker plays a young African woman living in (white) North Africa. She is “civilized” by Max, a French novelist – just as Henry Higgins trains Eliza Doolittle in the movie “My Fair Lady” – but in this film, Max’s training is for purely selfish reasons, it’s done an attempt to get back at his wife in France, whom he suspects of cheating on him.
