Johnson & Wales University is in the midst of a $42 million renovation of the former DoubleTree hotel on West Trade Street, which it operated for 20 years before converting into a residence hall. The 97,000-square-foot building will be gutted and redone with 150 rooms for upperclassmen and up to 276 beds. Along with the new rooms, the Maple will include an admissions welcome center and student lounge, along with several student services offices. As part of the project, the building's mechanical and electrical systems will be upgraded. The university expects construction to take two years.
